Spotlight: Deaf Empowering Network (DEN)

Building Community and Reducing Isolation
Through its Community Hubs, events, and workshops, DEN provides accessible spaces where deaf individuals can connect, share experiences, and develop new skills. These initiatives strengthen community bonds, reduce isolation, and ensure that deaf voices are not only heard but actively shape the services that impact their lives.
“Without DEN it would have been a struggle we wouldn’t have had the help we needed.
When DEN was set up it for the Deaf community to get involved, it supported us, it was our Deaf advocacy and PA. Den is Amazing and has a brilliant team. It makes the Deaf community get involved, gives people support and so they are not lonely or isolated.
Jeans kitchen is a great place to meet and socialise, to play bingo organise events. I believe Den is growing and has a great future ahead.”

Filling a Critical Gap
Since its inception, DEN has supported over 500 deaf people, including more than 100 regular clients in Middlesbrough. This work is especially vital following the closure of the Middlesbrough Deaf Centre in 2011, which left a significant gap in dedicated services. By stepping in, DEN has become a trusted leader in delivering essential support and creating new opportunities for the deaf community.
Comprehensive, Tailored Support
As a specialist service provider, DEN offers a wide range of tailored services, including:
- BSL Interpreting
- Community Care
- BSL & Deaf Awareness Training
- Advocacy
- Community Hubs
This holistic approach ensures that deaf individuals have access to both immediate assistance and long-term pathways for growth, independence, and leadership.
Creating Change, Not Just Services
DEN’s work goes beyond service delivery. Its programmes improve communication access, raise awareness of British Sign Language (BSL), and foster collaboration between deaf and hearing communities. Through professional training, innovative workshops, and community-led projects, DEN challenges barriers and champions inclusion every day.
Empowerment at the Core
What truly sets DEN apart is its unwavering commitment to empowerment. The organisation believes that deaf people should be supported to lead and thrive. Whether through advocacy, professional development, or inclusive community spaces, DEN provides the tools and opportunities for individuals to shape their own futures.
Transforming Lives in the North East
In a region where deaf communities have historically been underserved, DEN’s impact has been transformative. Its dedication to advancing equality, strengthening communities, and empowering individuals embodies the values celebrated by the Spotlight Award.
